The Minneapolis Institute of Arts has a phenomenal permanent collection of almost 100,000 objects from all around the world, spanning 5000 years of history.

The museum also hosts special exhibitions from lesser-known or local artists to major travelling exhibitions. There is usually one major special exhibition, and several smaller exhibitions to see. Some are free, as general admission to the museum is, but some major exhibitions require an entrance fee.

As well as ever changing exhibitions, the MIA has many programs, and special events.

Third Thursdays At MIA

Third Thursdays are a long-running evening event at MIA. In the evening the museum hosts a themed event incorporating performances, music, workshops and displays by artists. Refreshments in keeping with the evening's theme are available. Past Third Thursdays have celebrated Chinese New Year, African Arts and Roman Sculpture. The art and entertainment on Third Thursdays are free, with food and drink available for purchase.

Family Days at MIA

One Sunday every month is Family Day. All day long, musicians and dancers perform, artists give demonstrations, and children can get involved with hands-on art activities. Family Days are free.

Acoustic Sunrise Concerts

Local musicians perform live every Sunday morning at the museum's ArtsBreak coffee shop. The performances are free.

Lectures

MIA invites national and international artists, historians and scholars to give lectures at the museum. Some lectures are free; some have an admission charge, and the most popular may require advance reservations.

During the summer the museum puts on a subscription lecture series. It's very popular so register for the series as early as possible.

Annual Events

Every fall, the MIA puts on their annual Antiques Show & Sale, bringing fine antiques dealers from around the country to Minneapolis. Curator talks and special tours are part of the show.

Art In Bloom is a popular event held over several days in late spring. Floral artists reinterpret artworks from the museum's collections. In addition, floral arrangers and gardening experts give demonstrations. The event is free.

Visit the Minneapolis Institute of Arts Web site for more information and specific dates and times for these events.
