Minnesota Maple Syrup:Buying Local Maple Syrup & Collecting your Own Maple Syrup

By Clara James, About.com

Minnesota has a short maple syrup season that usually begins in early March and lasts only a few weeks. During that time, maple syrup farms tap their maple trees to produce maple syrup, and parks hold maple syrup events for us to learn about tapping trees, collecting sap and making maple syrup. Here's where to buy Minnesota-made maple syrup, and where to go to collect and make your own.

Maple Syruping in Your Backyard at Fort Snelling State Park

Fort Snelling State Park, nestled between Minneapolis and St. Paul, is holding "Maple Syruping in Your Backyard" workshops on Saturday and Sundays throughout March. Park staff will demonstrate what equipment is required, how to tap trees, and how to process sap into maple syrup.

Maple Syruping in your Backyard is held on March 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, 22, 28, and 29 in 2009.

Maple Syrup Madness! at Wargo Nature Center, Anoka

Pre-registration is required, register online at anokacountyparks.com.

Maple Syrup at Dodge Nature Center, St. Paul

Dodge Nature Center opens the maple syrup season on March 3 with maple syrup events all month long. Two family events on March 7 and 21 invite the whole family to join in the production process, starting with tapping a tree, visiting the maple syrup evaporator, and sampling syrup.

The season closes with all-you-can-eat pancake and sausage breakfast featuring the center's own maple syrup on March 21. Naturalists will lead short hikes to show the process of maple sap collection and syrup production, handy to walk off a few of those calories, and at $5 for adults and $2.50 for children, it's one of the best value maple syrup events of the season.
