Guide Review - Review of the Wild Onion Bar and Restaurant in St. Paul
Some places try to be everything to everyone, and usually end up being average in everything. The Wild Onion is a rarity for appealing successfully to just about everyone. Families and tourists visit by day, and sports fans, college kids and locals hang out and party at night.
The Wild Onion is a large place, with picture windows overlooking Grand Avenue. The brick walls are decorated with unique artwork and there's a brass bar that's just asking you to get belly up to it.
By day, office workers and Grand Avenue tourists come for lunch, then come evening the same office workers plus college students and locals are back for happy hour. Happy hour specials vary by day but usually draw a crowd. The bar offers discounts for birthday boys and girls, and serves free non-alcoholic drinks to designated drivers.
Weekend mornings are for brunch. They hype the parmesan potatoes that come with everything. Are they that good? Some people eat all the potatoes first and beg for seconds. A Build-Your-Own Bloody Mary bar with a choice of vodka and mixers is a nice touch, especially for those determined to compound their hangovers.
They have a live DJ playing on most nights, usually making it the busiest place on Grand Avenue on weekday evenings. Weekend evenings can get a bit rowdy, often drawing complaints from neighbors.
A great place to eat, drink, and be merry, but hush! on the way out please.
