Treats, Coffee and Cakes on St. Paul's Grand Avenue

By Clara James, About.com

After a hard afternoon's shopping on St. Paul's Grand Avenue, reward yourself with a cappuccino, a cake or an ice cream from one of the many independent coffee shops, bakeries and ice cream parlors on Grand Avenue.

Grand Ole Creamery

It's not that old, the Grand Ole Creamery opened in 1984. But the ice cream is old-fashioned, home made, rich, flavorful and entirely delicious. No wild-and-crazy flavors, instead a large selection of favorites. The waffle cones are fabulous too. Need convincing the extra calories are worth it? It's much better for the environment to eat your ice cream container, than toss a plastic cup away.

Cafe Latte

Incredibly popular cafeteria-style restaurant on the corner of Grand Avenue and Victoria Street, there is always a queue at lunchtime and evenings. The deserts, approximately one million to choose from, are worth it, and you can replenish the calories you burned standing up while waiting. And then some.

Bread and Chocolate

Kitty corner to Bread and Chocolate, and owned by the same people, Bread and Chocolate makes award winning brownies, cakes, pastries and cookies. A concise sandwich and salad menu is available too, the coffees are very good, and the queue is usually a fraction of length of that waiting at their sister store.

Amore Coffee Shop

This is probably the best coffee on Grand Avenue. It's tucked away in the Milton Mall, behind the Birkenstock store. The coffee is excellent, the atmosphere is warm and convivial, there's a small selection of baked goods, including gluten-free items, and organic snacks and food.

Wuollet Bakery

Grand Avenue's east shopping area is nicely bookended by bakeries: Cafe Latte/Bread and Chocolate at the east end, and Bravo!/Wuollet Bakery at the west end. This is one of several Wuollet locations in the Twin Cities: this local business has been operating in the Twin Cities for some 60 years and the experience is reflected in the extremely delicious range of cakes, bars and cookies.

Bravo! Cafe and Bakery

Wonderful cakes and pastries, coffee drinks, and bubble tea. Bravo! bakes several cakes suitable for vegans, and can even make vegan wedding cakes.

Coffee News Cafe

Reliably excellent cookies and cakes, and unreliably good coffee. When the coffee is good, it's great. When it's bad, it's awful. I've had delicious lattes, and bitter cappuccinos with bits of coffee grounds swimming in them. Still, I keep coming back for the cakes (there's six-layer cakes for those who feel like a challenge) and the food served is good too.

Shish Cafe

A cafe on the west end of Grand Avenue that serves Turkish coffee, and beautiful baklava pastries, as well as a menu of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern dishes.

The Tea Garden

Hubble bubble, toil and trouble... after all the toil of a morning of shopping, a bubble tea is a refreshing treat. Bubble tea is part drink, part desert: it's tea with pearls of tapioca added to it. It's somewhat of an acquired taste, but can be very delicious. Baked goods and light snacks are on offer at the Tea Garden too.

Coffee Bene

It's Coffee Ben-nay, not Coffee Bean-Spelled-Wrong, "bene" being Italian for "good". I'm happy to report that this coffee shop on the corner of Grand Avenue and Cleveland Avenue does exactly what it they say, and make very good coffee.

Sandwiches and baked goods are served as well. Coffee Bene is usually full of students since it's very close to Macalester College, but there's still fast and friendly service for anyone else who visits.
